Bavarian Inn Restaurant’s Glockenspiel Ready for the Holidays
Pied Piper returns to work after summer break

FRANKENMUTH, Mich. – Nov. 5, 2015 – After nearly 50 years of hard work, the Bavarian Inn Restaurant’s Glockenspiel Pied Piper needed a ‘break.’ Now, after a five-month hiatus, he’s back charming guests, just in time for the holidays.

A Memorial Day weekend brownout led to a silencing of the 35-bell carillon at the Glockenspiel Tower. Bavarian Inn Restaurant General Manager Amy Zehnder Grossi said repairs have been completed, and not a moment too soon.

“The Pied Piper’s laryngitis is finally over,” Zehnder Grossi added. “Four times each day since 1967, he told the story of how he led the rats out of Hamelin only to be double-crossed by the Mayor. We reluctantly gave him the summer off, but now it’s time for him to play his flute and carry on with this beautiful Frankenmuth tradition.”

With repairs complicated by the intricacies of not simply replacing but actually restoring the original voice mechanism, electricians first had to repair the structure’s high voltage outlets and panels. When that task was complete, technicians were able to interface the new controls that make the glockenspiel’s music, bells and narrator come to life–performing as they always have.

The Pied Piper legend dates back to 13th century Germany. To tell the ancient town of Hamelin’s story, the Inn constructed a 50-foot high bell tower. It holds bells cast in Holland and 15 wood-carved figures from Germany. The figures, some as tall as 4 ½ feet, move on four separate tracks across the stage during the story, which unfolds in about 15 minutes.

Just below the movable stage is a large clock face with gold-covered numerals, and hands that are made of copper with leaf-gold covering. Besides the Pied Piper story, the carillon plays a five-bell Westminster chimes on the hour and other tunes.

The event, to benefit the Fallen and Wounded Soldiers Fund, a Michigan-based charity, will include a silent and live auction, Hors d’oeuvres, and a cash bar. According to the Bavarian Inn’s Kathy Walstad, chairperson for the auction, “The Fallen and Wounded Soldiers Fund, this year’s charity for our annual Company Giving Program, is helping vets who are waiting for claims to be settled and many have no income. It’s important to note that 97 cents of every dollar is going to our Michigan warriors to help them with their medical bills, living expenses, utility shut-off notices or whatever is needed to quickly help them once they return home.”

“The Bavarian Inn,” she added, “has many caring team members who give so generously each year to help those in need, with the Bavarian Inn’s Zehnder family matching most of those funds! We all look forward to an exciting year of giving.”

Tickets for the auction are $7 in advance, $10 at the door. Cash and check payments only are being accepted for auction admission and winning bids. For more information, call (989) 652-9985, extension 3214 or email to kwalstad@bavarianinn.com. Information about the auction may also be found at www.bavarianinn.com.

Bavarian Inn Celebrates 50 years of ‘Squash Roundup’
Fall harvest event brings community, volunteers together

2015 marks the 50th consecutive year that the Weiss Family Farm has supplied squash to the Frankenmuth Bavarian Inn Restaurant. The squash is a seasonal favorite among diners and visitors who buy the Inn’s pumpkin pie, which features squash as a savory ingredient.

FRANKENMUTH, Mich. – Sept. 17, 2015 – It’s one of the most anticipated events on the Bavarian Inn Restaurant’s autumn calendar, and this year marks its golden anniversary.

It’s the 50th annual “Squash Roundup” taking place Saturday, Sept. 26 when tons of Blue Hubbard squash, grown by the Fred Weiss Family Farm in Frankenmuth, are harvested from the fields and delivered to the Bavarian Inn Restaurant.

This marks the 50th consecutive year that the Weiss Family Farm has supplied squash to the Bavarian Inn. The squash – each weighing anywhere from 25 to 35 pounds – will be harvested at the farm, where up to 40 volunteers also enjoy a hearty home-cooked meal. This year, the Weiss Family plans to invite spouses and other family members of the volunteers, together with past volunteers to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the harvest.

The truckloads of squash are unloaded at the restaurant by members of the St. Lorenz Lutheran Church Youth Group, creating gigantic bluish-grayish “squash mountains,” which attract many curiosity seekers among restaurant guests and visitors alike. This year, the color palette takes on a new hue with the addition of a new squash variety, the Golden Hubbard, to the harvest.

Blue Hubbard squash live up to their big size with big flavor, as well. Their deep orange flesh has a sweet and nutty taste, making it a natural for a variety of cooking techniques in the Bavarian Inn kitchen. It is here where Bavarian Inn co-founder Dorothy Zehnder works her culinary magic, adding her own secret recipe of seasonings and butter to each batch.

The prepared squash is a popular seasonal feature on the Bavarian Inn’s menu from October through December. Diners may enjoy squash in items such as soups and savory side dishes. For dessert lovers, squash is as a key ingredient for the Inn’s delicious pumpkin pie.

Now, that’s music! Revue revives great hits of yesterday
Music lovers can swing to the sounds reminiscent of Frank Sinatra, Bobby Darin, Mel Torme, and more as the Bavarian Inn Restaurant presents a special mid-day concert by Ryan DeHues, “Swingin’ the Sinatra Way,” Wednesday, Sept. 23, with two shows at 11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.

DeHues and his smooth baritone voice valiantly keeps the flame burning in the tradition of his jazz and swing influences. His concerts are based on the songbooks of some of America’s greatest composers such as Cole Porter, Jerome Kern, and Sammy Cahn. He’s a young but polished performer from nearby Chesaning, Michigan who has performed on national TV, belting out tunes with all the finesse of an old pro. (Think “’Ol’ Blue Eyes!”)

During his shows, DeHues often shares some of the background of each of his songs, lending a fascinating insight into the music, the composers, and artists of that era.

“Ryan’s wide repertoire of the very best jazz and swing standards will deliver a delightful afternoon of elegant, sophisticated sounds that audiences of all ages can appreciate,” said Bavarian Inn President Bill Zehnder. “We’re excited to have him here to perform for our guests.”

The shows include a hearty Frankenmuth® chicken plate luncheon. Price for the event is $40 per person, which includes lunch, the show, milk, tea, coffee, or fountain soft drink, tax and gratuity. The Greatest of the Great Lakes Bay honors come on the heels of two other distinctions for the Lodge: The Knot Best of Weddings, an award representing the highest-rated wedding professionals as reviewed by real couples, their families and wedding guests on The Knot, and the 2015 Family Vacation Favorite Award from Family Vacation Critic, a popular online resource for parents looking for a family-friendly place to vacation.

The Bavarian Inn Restaurant was chosen for the second year as “Best Restaurant with Private Dining Space” by readers of Michigan Meetings + Events magazine last month.

“It’s exciting to see that our focus on providing an outstanding experience for our guests is garnering awards like these. We take pride in providing the very best in hospitality and a true ‘our family serving your family’ mentality in all we do,” said Bavarian Inn Lodge Vice President of Sales and Marketing Martha Zehnder Keller.

Bavarian Inn Restaurant hosts ‘Purely Michigan Dinner’ Aug. 28

Frankenmuthdinner

Sample some of the Great Lakes State’s tastiest dishes

FRANKENMUTH, Mich. – August 3, 2015 – Diners will have the opportunity to enjoy a creative collection of Michigan home-grown, home-produced foods and beverages as the Bavarian Inn Restaurant presents its annual “Purely Michigan Dinner” Friday, Aug. 28 at 6 p.m.

This four-course event brings together food and beverage pairings with the cooperation of more than a dozen growers, brewers, and other suppliers from across the Great Lakes State.

According to Bavarian Inn President Bill Zehnder, the Inn hosts this special dinner to showcase the excellence and diversity of Michigan’s farms, orchards, wineries, and breweries that are putting the state on foodie radar screens across the country. The menu for the event features products from places like Grand Rapids, Rochester, Ferndale and the Traverse City region.

“The Bavarian Inn,” Zehnder noted, “uses more ‘Pure Michigan’ products than most other restaurants. The abundance of quality Michigan-produced meats, produce, wines and beers has provided Bavarian Inn chefs a delectable palette to create a menu with something to please everyone.”

The dinner begins with a Milkshake Stout Beer Shake from the Rochester Mills Beer Co., a mead beverage produced by B. Nektar Meadery of Ferndale, honey-smoked salmon with cucumber, and stout beer wings.

Next comes a seasonal roasted carrot salad with honey mustard dressing and a wheat berry and honey roll. The salad is accompanied by Lucky Stone Dry Cider from the Saugatuck Brewing Co.

An herb-crusted bone-in pork rib chop is the main course, served with caramelized onions and Bavarian Inn spätzle. The wine selection is a Pinot Noir from the Leelanau Peninsula’s Black Star Farms winery.

For dessert, Bavarian Inn chefs will be serving Michigan blueberry strudel with a blueberry glaze accompanied by vanilla ice cream.

In addition, guests will learn more about Michigan’s “growing” food and beverage reputation from some of its most renowned entrepreneurs, including T.M. Klein & Sons Honey of St. Charles, Rochester Mills Beer Co. of Rochester, and B. Nektar Meadery of Ferndale. Mike Fassezke of Star of the West Milling Co. of Frankenmuth is the featured guest speaker. The Bavarian Inn’s Bill Zehnder and Chef Phil Fahrenbruch will also be addressing attendees.

Besides great food and drink, the “Purely Michigan Dinner” provides an opportunity for guests to educate themselves about shopping for locally produced products and using them in their home kitchens. “Right now, at the peak of the growing season and the rest of the year, consumers can directly make a positive impact on our state’s economy,” Zehnder said. “It benefits our farmers, ranchers, and those businesses producing food and beverage products made right here in Michigan.”

Reservations are required for the event, and may be made by calling 1-800-BAVARIA or 989-652-9941. The price is $55 per person, and includes the four-course meal, featured beverages, tax, and gratuity.

The annual Bavarian Inn Experience, with a cash prize purse of $8,000, ranks as one of the Midwest region’s premier triathlon venues. It features Olympic and Sprint Triathlon events beginning at 7:45 a.m. at the Cass River and continuing across the picturesque countryside. A pair of “aquabike” events have been added this year, too.

Olympic Triathlon athletes will be tested with a 1,500-meter swim, a 40,000-meter bike ride, and 10,000-meter run while Sprint Triathlon participants will go all out for about half those lengths. Aquabike events include a 1,500-meter swim and 40,000-meter bike ride for participants on the Olympic side while Sprint athletes will contend with a 500-meter swim and 20,000-meter ride.

The Bavarian Inn Experience ends at noon with an awards ceremony open to the public at the Festival Platz followed by a celebration with famous Bavarian Inn chicken dinners, brats and beverages for purchase. Also that day, beginning at 11 a.m., the state’s strongest men and women will test their mettle and muscular power as Frankenmuth hosts its third Michigan Strong Man Competition.

The contest takes place at the Covered Bridge and Leather Gift Shop parking lot in downtown Frankenmuth, and includes five feats of physical fortitude – from car and truck lifting, to toting cement-filled beer kegs. And, there’s the classic contest from the World’s Strongest Man event from 1988 – the Kern’s Sausage Hold, where athletes “meat” their match by trying to hang on to a huge row of hanging sausages until their body says, “no more!”Visit www.mistrongman.com to learn more.
