Maker’s Mark® began with one family’s quest to create a bourbon they enjoyed drinking and sharing with friends. That’s hardly revolutionary today, but in 1953 it changed an industry. Bill Samuels Sr.’s quest to create Maker’s Mark® began with his only copy of the family’s trusted 170-year-old recipe. It was that recipe the sixth-generation distiller promptly set on fire and started from scratch with a wheated mash that focused on a smooth flavor profile that “wouldn’t blow your ears off.”

FRANKENMUTH, Mich. – August 25, 2020 – The matriarch of the Bavarian Inn’s Zehnder family, Dorothy Zehnder, has been named a 2020 inductee into the Michigan Women’s Hall of Fame.

The 98-year-young Zehnder is co-founder and co-owner of Frankenmuth’s Bavarian Inn and the many business operations under that name. A far-reaching enterprise, this includes Bavarian Inn Restaurant and Castle Shops, Covered Bridge Gift Shop, Frankenmuth River Place Shops, Frankenmuth Gift Shops Inc., Bavarian Inn Lodge and a specialty line of food products. Zehnder continues to work at the restaurant with no plans to retire. She and her late husband William “Tiny” Zehnder have 3 children, 10 grandchildren, and 18 great-grandchildren. Currently there are nine family members in leadership roles in various business operations.

The author of three cookbooks, Zehnder first published “Cookies & Bars,” a collection of desserts used at the Bavarian Inn and in her home. Then in 2011, she published “Come Cook with Me,” an 80-year collection of recipes, wisdom and stories from her life as the Bavarian Inn’s much beloved matriarch. With the success of these, she wrote another cookbook in 2014, “From My Kitchen to Yours,” featuring 195 handpicked family favorite recipes from her vast 1,000 plus personal collection.

During her 83 years in business, Zehnder has received numerous awards. Later this year she is being recognized with the Saginaw Chamber’s Lifetime Community Service Award.

“Our entire family is thrilled for Dorothy to be honored this way,” said daughter Judy Zehnder Keller. “As our mother, grandmother and great-grandmother she means so much to our family, to the entire Frankenmuth community and to everyone throughout the state of Michigan. It is a well-deserved recognition.”

Zehnder, along with five other new nominees, will be honored at a ceremony on Oct. 15, in Lansing.  The other nominees include: Najah Bazzy, RN, an internationally recognized healer, humanitarian and interfaith leader and founder of Zaman International. Essentially, Ruth was one of the “Human Math Computers” depicted in the movie “Hidden Figures.”

Established in 1983, the Women’s Hall of Fame is located in downtown Lansing. Today the hall of fame, which includes 333 inductees, is organized and managed through Michigan Women Forward (MWF), an organization founded in 1986 to encourage women to play an active role in philanthropy and governance.

“Today’s strong women can learn so much by studying the paths of those who came before us,” said Carolyn Cassin, president and CEO, Michigan Women Forward.  “These amazing honorees have conquered so many obstacles and accomplished so much throughout their lives.  We are proud to salute them and want to be sure their stories are told.”

Bavarian Inn Restaurant and Lodge Release new Private Selection Maker’s Mark Bourbon

FRANKENMUTH, Mich. – August 18, 2020  – The Bavarian Inn Restaurant and Lodge have teamed up with Maker’s Mark, one of the country’s finest producers of American bourbon, to release a unique private label bourbon.

The Bavarian Inn Private Selection, by Maker’s Mark, is now available at the Restaurant and Lodge following its arrival in July. It will also be featured at a sold-out Bourbon Dinner later this month.

The new Bavarian Inn bourbon is the latest product in a strong private label program already in place at the Restaurant and Lodge that includes beer, wine and root beer, among others.

“For decades we have offered high quality private label beers and wines on our Bavarian Inn properties,” said Bill Zehnder, President of the Bavarian Inn. “My father Tiny Zehnder had always hand selected each one, so when Maker’s Mark offered us a chance to develop our own bourbon we jumped at the opportunity. As a private select drink it will nicely complement our current list of excellent bourbons.”

Under the Maker’s Mark process, the Bavarian Inn team, including family members and key managers, traveled to Kentucky where they chose the various barrel “staves” that would develop the flavor profile for this private selection. The 50-gallon barrel took over five months to distill.

While bottles of the bourbon are not being offered for sale, guests at the Bavarian Inn properties can try it many different ways, offered “neat,” “on the rocks” or in a number of classic bourbon cocktails. Bar managers at the Bavarian Inn are currently working on developing specialty cocktails using the bourbon that will be unique to Frankenmuth.

The Bavarian Inn first began its relationship with Maker’s Mark last year when planning the Restaurant’s first bourbon dinner, an event in January that drew over 200 guests.

As the relationship grew, Bill Zehnder said his daughter connected them with another Frankenmuth High School graduate who works for Maker’s Mark. From there the family worked with a Maker’s Mark “diplomat” to learn about and become involved in distilling the special bourbon.

Maker’s Mark private select program allows customers to take a fully matured cask strength bourbon and have staves with different flavor profiles inserted to enhance and finish the flavor process. This barrel finishing takes an additional nine weeks to complete.

Bavarian Inn Team Members Reach 70-Year Milestone

Dorothy Zehnder and Virgil Celebrate Seven Decades of Service

FRANKENMUTH, Mich. – Jan. 7, 2020  – The Bavarian Inn Restaurant and Lodge are fixtures in the heart of the Frankenmuth community. Among the many men and women who work for this historic organization, there are also a number of “fixtures,” none more dedicated and long-running than Dorothy Zehnder and Virgil Diamond.

In 2020 Dorothy Zehnder, matriarch of the Bavarian Inn, and Virgil Diamond, a much-respected team member who has done nearly everything for the organization, are each celebrating 70 years of service to the Bavarian Inn and the community.

Dorothy is the true queen of the kitchen and has led the way since 1950. During her seven decades, she raised her family of three children, and now, at 98 years young, still works six days a week checking hundreds of details and mentoring many other team members.

Virgil started working at the former Fischer’s Hotel at age 15. He has done just about everything to help build the Bavarian Inn business during his years as a manager. He currently uses his talents at Frankenmuth River Place Shops with the maintenance and grounds team.

During this celebration year the entire Bavarian Inn team is thankful and excited to honor both Dorothy and Virgil and thank them for their years of dedication and loyalty.

“We consider ourselves lucky to work alongside such great examples of leadership and hard work,” said Amy Zehnder Grossi, general manager of the Restaurant. “What a blessing they have been to our family and our community.”

Bavarian Inn Restaurant Hosts Unique Bourbon Dinner

Tasting Includes a Variety of Maker’s Mark Bourbons

FRANKENMUTH, Mich. – Jan. 2, 2020 –  Here’s a chance to sip on America’s ode to bourbon, Kentucky Straight Bourbon, all while experiencing a wonderful dinner at the Bavarian Inn Restaurant’s Bourbon Dinner on Friday, Jan. 17.

This delightful evening begins at 6:30 p.m. and includes a thoughtfully crafted five-course menu by Silver Plate Award Winner Chef Phil Fahrenbruch, accompanied by a variety of Maker’s Mark® barrel-age bourbons. The guest speakers for the evening will be Allie Dodson, Maker’s Mark event manager and 2007 Frankenmuth High School alumni, and Greta Harper, Maker’s Mark diplomat.

The one the sixth-generation distiller promptly set on fire and started from scratch with a wheated mash bill that focused on a smooth flavor profile that “wouldn’t blow your ears off.”

The Bavarian Inn Restaurant’s bourbon experience begins with a taste of Maker’s Mulled Apple Cider, followed by an appetizer of Bourbon Glazed Chicken & Waffles and a Butternut Squash Bisque. These will be served with tasting of Maker’s Mark and Maker’s Mark 46.

A savory Kale Salad with Toasted Pecans, Bourbon Candied Bacon, and a Pecan Whiskey Vinaigrette is the next course, accompanied by Maker’s Mark 46 Highball.

Following a sorbet du jour, the main course will be Peach Glazed Beef Brisket served with a New York Sour, featuring Maker’s Mark Cask Strength Bourbon. To end your evening, a Banana Fosters Cheesecake will be served with a Maker’s Mark Exclusive Surprise.

The cost for this unique evening is $70 per person and includes the meal, listed bourbons, a Maker’s Mark red wax, hand-dipped glass, tax and gratuity. Reservations are required. Call 1-800-BAVARIA or 989-652-9941.

Frankenmuth Labor Day ‘Bridge Walk’ going strong after 33 years

FRANKENMUTH, Mich. August 22, 2019 – In 1986, hundreds of Frankenmuth residents and guests came together to walk over the Bavarian Inn Wooden Covered Bridge (Holz Brücke) in honor of Labor Day. 33 years later, the tradition continues, with this year’s Bridge Walk taking place at noon on Monday, September 2.

Beginning on the east side of the 239-foot bridge, which spans the Cass River between the Bavarian Inn Lodge and the Bavarian Inn Restaurant, the walk takes approximately five minutes and ends later at the Fischer Platz outdoor café located at the southwest corner of the Bavarian Inn Restaurant. Walkers can then enjoy musical entertainment, with all their favorite food and beverages available for purchase.

The walk was the idea of Al and Louise Schneider, a Frankenmuth couple who had in their minds the Mackinac Bridge Labor Day Walk tradition.

“They came up with the idea at home, just thinking out loud about bringing that spirit right here at home in Frankenmuth,” recalls Bavarian Inn President Bill Zehnder. “We’re so happy to play our part in keeping their vision and tradition alive.”

Made with timbers from Oregon and locally sourced shingles for its roof, the bridge was originally built in 1980 and restored four years ago, with 16-foot planks forming the roadway.

Why ‘Knot?’ Celebrate National Pretzel Day Friday, April 26 at Bavarian Inn Restaurant

Michigan on Main Bar and Grill has a special deal

FRANKENMUTH, Mich. – April 19, 2019 – Whether enjoyed at home, the ballpark, or the neighborhood tavern, pretzels are one of America’s favorite snacks. Friday, April 26 is National Pretzel Day, and the Bavarian Inn Restaurant is joining the celebration.

The Restaurant is offering a beer and pretzel special at its Michigan on Main Bar and Grill dining area. That day, guests can enjoy a large soft pretzel along with one of their extensive selection of Michigan craft beers for just $9. Dipping cheese is available for only 50 cents more.

The Bavarian Inn served more than 71,000 housemade pretzels to its guests just last year. 31,000 of those were from the Castle Shop Bakery, located in the lower level of the Restaurant. Their on-the-go pretzels are perfect for those who want to celebrate pretzel day quickly, and their pretzel treats for dogs can let guests’ furry friends in on the fun.

National Pretzel Day originated in Pennsylvania when Governor Ed Rendell, whose state boasts an abundance of German family pretzel bakers, declared it an official observance in 2003.

Michigan on Main Bar and Grill inside the Bavarian Inn Restaurant is a casual and contemporary dining space showcasing Michigan-sourced food along with Michigan craft-brewed beers, Michigan wines and specialty Michigan cocktails.

Tiny and Dorothy Zehnder, 1959

Bavarian Inn Remembers Founder William “Tiny” Zehnder

Frankenmuth patriarch would have turned 100 on April 6

FRANKENMUTH, Mich. – March 25, 2019 –  April 6, 2019 is a special day at the Bavarian Inn Restaurant and the Bavarian Inn Lodge, because it marks the 100th birthday of the late William “Tiny” Zehnder, founder of the restaurant and driving force behind Frankenmuth’s transformation into “Michigan’s Little Bavaria.”

Tiny’s journey to Frankenmuth’s patriarch began in 1950, when the Zehnder family purchased Fischer’s Hotel, which sat across the street from his family’s restaurant. Tiny and his young wife Dorothy (a former waitress at Fischer’s) became the managers of Fischer’s, and immediately set about making improvements. But despite a modernized kitchen, improved building design and more, the restaurant still struggled for survival.

Instead of giving up and closing the restaurant, Tiny and his family decided to expand. In 1959, Fischer’s Hotel was renamed the “Bavarian Inn” in keeping with that instantly recognizable architecture and design that was Tiny’s idea and is the hallmark of Frankenmuth today.

As the restaurant and the town around it grew, Tiny continued to work passionately for nearly 50 years, both expanding his restaurant and encouraging other Frankenmuth businesses to adopt the Bavarian theme. Tiny resigned from active management of the Bavarian Inn Restaurant in 2004, but he remained Chairman of the Board of Bavarian Inn, Inc. (the umbrella entity for all Bavarian Inn properties) for the rest of his life.

While he passed away at age 87 in 2006, there’s no doubt that his legacy lives on through the family-run business and the small town it calls home.

“Tiny was called Mr. Frankenmuth, and is the reason Frankenmuth has the German architecture we do,” said Martha Zehnder Kaczynski, Vice President at Bavarian Inn Lodge and Tiny’s granddaughter. “He was doing ‘Branding’ before it had a name. He implemented ‘Farm to Table’ before it was a trend. Tiny was definitely a man ahead of his time.”

Today, Bavarian Inn, Inc. includes Bavarian Inn Restaurant, Bavarian Inn Lodge, Frankenmuth River Place Shops, and Frankenmuth Gift Shop Inc.

Bell’s Oberon Ale 2019 Release ‘on tap’ March 25

FRANKENMUTH, Mich. February 27, 2019  – Craft beer lovers have two big release parties ahead at the Bavarian Inn Restaurant‘s Michigan on Main Bar and Grill: a Kentucky Breakfast Stout party on Friday, March 15 beginning at 6 p.m., and the annual party celebrating the springtime release of Bell’s Brewery Oberon Ale on Friday, March 25 from 5-7 p.m.

Kentucky Breakfast Stout, more affectionately known as KBS, is a limited-edition beer from Grand Rapids-based Founders Brewery. This stout is known for being brewed with a “massive amount” of coffee and chocolate before being placed in oak bourbon barrels and aged in mines for 12 months.

Bell’s Oberon Ale is one of the most popular seasonal brews produced by the Kalamazoo and Comstock, Michigan brewers. Available only until September, Bell’s Oberon Ale is a wheat ale described as a “classic summer beer,” with a spicy hop character blended with mild, fruity aromas.

Bavarian Inn Bar Manager Bill Chapman notes that Michigan on Main is the only venue in the Frankenmuth area to host the Oberon Ale release.

At both release parties, guests will be able to participate in games, giveaways, prizes, and one-on-one discussion time with brewery representatives. In addition, Michigan on Main will have menu items to complement the KBS and Bell’s Oberon Ale.

Love and laughter: Bavarian Inn Restaurant hosts Valentine’s weekend comedy dinner show

Food and fun happening Friday, Feb. 15

FRANKENMUTH, Mich. – Jan. 23, 2019 – Love and laughter come together for Valentine’s weekend as the Bavarian Inn Restaurant presents a Valentine’s Comedy Dinner Show on Friday, Feb. 15. The fun begins at 6:30 p.m.

Headliners for the evening’s performance are comedians Brent Terhune and Melissa Hager.

Terhune got his start in stand-up comedy in Indianapolis, Indiana at the age of 16. Not many comics can pull off Terhune’s laid-back style of comedy and remain just as absurd, relevant, and funny as he is. Whether talking about the everyday struggles of being a redhead, life as a college student and radio DJ, or his off-the-wall “Uncle Frank and family” stories, Terhune’s act is known to keep audiences laughing well after he’s left the stage.

Hager, a mid-Michigan native and resident, is “local, loved, and laughable,” according to her biography. In the styles of Melissa McCarthy, Jim Carrey, and Will Ferrell, Hager’s light-hearted approach to comedy includes childhood tales, life in the country, and other life lessons turned hilariously upside down. She has also served as emcee at the Frankenmuth Comedy Series and has produced comedy shows across the region.

The evening’s dinner menu includes soup du jour, mixed greens salad, double-cut barbecue pork chop, potato cheese puffs, family style noodles, vegetable du jour, and a special Valentine’s dessert.

Cost of the event is $50 per person, which includes show, meal, a non-alcoholic beverage, tax and gratuity. A cash bar will be available. Content is suitable for adults. Reservations and prepayment are required and may be made by contacting the Bavarian Inn Restaurant at 1-800-BAVARIA or (989) 652-9941.

Marking 32 years, annual Frankenmuth Labor Day Bridge Walk remains a tradition

FRANKENMUTH, Mich. August 27, 2018 – In a state full of lakes, rivers and other waterways, Michigan residents are no strangers to bridges. But one bridge in particular has been a big part of the Labor Day holiday for 32 years.

Since 1986, hundreds of Frankenmuth residents and guests have come together for the Annual Bavarian Inn Wooden Covered Bridge (Holz Brücke) Labor Day Walk. This year it will take place at noon, Monday, September 3.

The bridge, originally built in 1980 and restored three years ago, was made with timbers from Oregon and locally sourced shingles for its roof and 16-foot planks that form the roadway.

This year’s event will once again begin on the east side of the 239-foot structure, which spans Cass River between the Bavarian Inn Lodge and the Bavarian Inn Restaurant. Guests staying at the Bavarian Inn Lodge over the Labor Day weekend are invited to join Frankenmuth residents and visitors for the annual tradition. Walkers will arrive approximately five minutes later at the Fischer Platz outdoor café, located at the southwest corner of the Bavarian Inn Restaurant. Once there, all in attendance will be able to enjoy musical entertainment along with their favorite food and beverages that will be available for purchase.

Today, Bavarian Inn President Bill Zehnder still recalls the vision of Al and Louise Schneider, a Frankenmuth couple who had in their minds the Mackinac Bridge Labor Day Walk tradition.

“One day they were talking at home and thought out loud about the idea of bringing that spirit right here at home in Frankenmuth,” said Zehnder. “We’re grateful for their vision and remain determined to make sure we continue that tradition.”

Bavarian Inn Restaurant celebrates 130 years of dining hospitality

Special events planned year-round to mark historic anniversary

FRANKENMUTH, Mich. Feb. 5, 2018 — Beginning this month and continuing throughout 2018, the Bavarian Inn Restaurant will be celebrating its 130th anniversary as a continuing business and dining favorite of hundreds of thousands of visitors each year.

Special menus and events are being planned over the next several months to mark the historic occasion, according to Bavarian Inn Marketing Manager Mandy Borsenik. Both regular patrons and those planning weekend getaways or vacations in Michigan are invited to follow the restaurant’s social media sites (Twitter, Facebook, etc.) for news about upcoming anniversary events.

The Bavarian Inn Restaurant was founded as the Union House Hotel in February,1888 by German immigrant Theodore Fischer and renamed “Fischer’s Hotel.” His family continued the business for the next two generations. It was Theodore’s son, Herman and wife, Lydia, who are credited with first promoting “Frankenmuth all-you-can-eat family style chicken dinners.” The couple passed their popular Fischer’s Hotel to their son, Elmer, in 1941.

The William & Emilie (Bickel) Zehnder, Sr. Family has been operating Zehnder’s Restaurant since 1928. Their son William Jr, whom everyone called “Tiny”, worked as a farmer. He would stop at Fischer’s to pick up garbage to feed the hogs on his farm. He inquired about the possibility of the Zehnder family purchasing Fischer’s. The sale to the Zehnder family was finalized February 9, 1950.

Tiny left farming, and he and his young wife, Dorothy (a former waitress at Fischer’s) became the managers of the new business. Almost immediately, they modernized the kitchen, installed dishwashing equipment, built a laundry, and improved and expanded the building design.

The expansion gave the restaurant a new viable focus, one that instilled ethnic pride. The new addition boasted an authentic Bavarian exterior-stucco walls, woodcarving, flower boxes and other German accents were blended with the new German entrees served by “Bavarian” costumed servers. A weeklong celebration with German entertainment was held in 1959, which today is known as the Frankenmuth Bavarian Festival.

Almost non-stop remodeling and expansion continued, transforming the interior and exterior of the building to match the Bavarian theme. In 1967, the stunning 50-foot Glockenspiel was added, topped with a 35-bell carillon. It became an instant Bavarian Inn landmark with its revolving figures that depict the legend of the Pied Piper of Hameln.

Dorothy Zehnder has been in this building since 1937, when she worked as a waitress at Fischer’s. She continues to work six days a week at 95+ years of age. Since purchasing the restaurant in 1950, she has routinely worked alongside family and team members. She has personally developed many of the recipes used in the restaurant and has taught thousands of employees the correct method to prepare all the food that is served in the 12 dining rooms that seat 1,200 guests.

Three generations of the Zehnder family are actively involved in the day-to-day operations of the restaurant. Dorothy is joined by son William A. (Bill), President, his wife, Karen and daughter, Amy Zehnder Grossi, Co-General Managers. Another daughter of Bill and Karen’s, Katie Zehnder, is also a Manager at Frankenmuth River Place Shops. Tiny & Dorothy’s daughter, Judy Zehnder Keller, is President of the Bavarian Inn Lodge. Judy’s son, Michael Zehnder, has joined her as General Manager at the Lodge and her husband, Don Keller, is the Corporate Treasurer. Judy and Don also have one other child involved in the family business – Martha Zehnder Kaczynski who is Vice President of Sales & Marketing at the Bavarian Inn Lodge.

FRANKENMUTH, Mich. – Jan. 26, 2018 – Through their Company Giving Programs, Bavarian Inn Restaurant employees and their colleagues at the Bavarian Inn Lodge raised nearly $22,200 in 2017 to benefit employee-selected charities.

Bavarian Inn Restaurant raised $15,403.76 in 2017 through its more than 31-year-old Company Giving Program. The benefiting charity was the Defeat MSA Foundation (Multiple System Atrophy).

The year-long campaign concluded at the end of December and the grand total for fundraising was announced at the post-holiday employee party on January 8. According to Kathy Walstad, co-chairperson of this year’s Bavarian Inn Company Giving Program, employees raised funds for this charity through voluntary payroll deduction, candy sales, a holiday open house event and other activities throughout the year. “Bavarian Inn Restaurant,” Walstad added, “has over 400 caring team members who give so generously each year to help those in need. We look forward to an exciting year of giving in 2018.”

Restaurant employees have selected Wings of Mercy as this year’s Company Giving Program beneficiary. It’s a Michigan-based nonprofit that provides, through volunteer pilots, free air transportation to distant medical facilities for patients who cannot afford to fly to seek treatment. Bavarian Inn Lodge employee donations of $3,394 are being directed to the Child Abuse and Neglect Council, the American Cancer Society, and the Make-a-Wish Foundation. Coupled with dollar-for-dollar company matching funds, the campaign was able to raise nearly $6,800 for the three charities.

This marks the third year in a row that Bavarian Inn Lodge employees have surpassed the previous year’s donation totals. Total contributions rose 15 percent from 2016 levels.

Past charities aided by the Bavarian Inn Company Giving Programs include the Fallen and Wounded Soldiers Fund, Hospice for Hope, Special Olympics, Special Days Camp and Saginaw Habitat for Humanity.

The evening’s dinner menu includes soup du jour, mixed green salad with a Bavarian pretzel, honey and herb roasted pork with apple-cranberry demi-glace, family-style noodles, vegetable du jour, and a special Valentine’s dessert.

About Bavarian Inn

Celebrating 125 years of service in 2013, the Bavarian Inn Restaurant has become a Michigan landmark. Generations of diners, lodgers and tourists from around the globe have discovered true Bavarian hospitality thanks to Dorothy and her late husband William “Tiny” Zehnder. Guests experience the old-world European charm of the Bavarian Inn – whether it’s the famous chicken dinners, fresh baked goods or Michigan’s greatest selection of German beer. Bavarian Inn also prides itself on being one of the top consumers of Pure Michigan agricultural products. Nestled within a backdrop of authentic German architecture, a variety of shops and other fun activities, a trip to Frankenmuth would not be complete without a visit to the Bavarian Inn.
