95-year-old Bavarian Inn Matriarch Throws First Pitch at Detroit Tigers game

Pure Michigan night recognizes Dorothy Zehnders longstanding dedication to Michigans hospitality industry

FRANKENMUTH, Mich. June 13, 2017 – While serving delicious food to thousands of guests is her life calling, Dorothy Zehnder, the 95-year-young co-founder and matriarch of the Bavarian Inn Restaurant, got to take on another role Tuesday night. Her family members, co-workers and fans alike cheered loudly as Dorothy took the mound at Comerica Park to toss the ceremonial first pitch as part of Pure Michigan Night before a game that featured the Detroit Tigers going up against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Dorothy, along with her late husband William “Tiny” Zehnder, helped put Frankenmuth and Michigan on the map for thousands of visitors to the area, a key reason she was honored at the event.

Still working six days a week in the kitchen at the Bavarian Inn Restaurant, Dorothy often uses her “day off” to bake in her kitchen at home, something she is quick to say is one of the most enjoyable things she could possibly do.

“I refer myself as ‘retired working,’” says Dorothy of the lifestyle she continues to embrace.

As she got ready at Comerica Park, Dorothy said she could have never imagined being in the position to throw the first pitch.

“I have wonderful memories of attending Tigers’ games with family and friends in the past,” she said. “It was often an annual event, but who would have thought that I, at age 95, could be throwing out the first pitch? I am thrilled and extremely honored to be asked.”

Bavarian Inn Restaurant takes off the gloves for ‘Battle of the Booze’ June 23

Wine vs. Beer dinner features gourmet dishes paired with Washington wines and Michigan beers

FRANKENMUTH, Mich. June 9, 2017 – It’s the age-old question – wine or beer? The Bavarian Inn Restaurant is seeking the answer, as well as presenting some great food, at its upcoming Wine vs. Beer Dinner on Friday, June 23, 2017 at 6:30 p.m.

Guests will enjoy a course by course competition of wines from Charles Smith Wines out of Washington state against beers from Odd Side Ales brewery, a Michigan craft brewer.

“We can’t wait to find out which will win the vote of our guests at this unique culinary and spirits event,” says Bill Zehnder, Bavarian Inn President.

Guests will enjoy a starter course of salmon mousseline topped with a pineapple lime salsa, accompanied by Substance Sauvignon Blanc, in the “Loire style,” and Scallywagger, an imperial pineapple IPA.

Next is nam sod Thai pork salad, served with Kung Fu Girl Riesling, featuring notes of citrus blossom, lime leaf and white peach that pairs well with Thai food. The beer competitor in this round is Hop Gobbler, an extra pale ale loaded with hops flavor.

Following a refreshing sorbet du jour, the entrée is tagliatelle surf and turf pasta with herb butter sauce. It will be paired with Vino Rosé featuring aromas of Italian melon, faint cherry, camellias and dried herbs. Its rival in this course is Citra Pale Ale, the flagship beer from Odd Side Ales and brewed exclusively with Citra hops.

Lemon strawberry shortcake finishes this highly satisfying dinner, complemented by Charles Smith’s Secco Moscato, with notes of white peach, apricot, lychee and orange blossoms, and Bean Flicker Blonde, a stout with a light coffee note.

The only question that remains at the end of the evening is which spirit is the choice of the people – wine or beer?

The price for this special food, wine and beer event is $60 per person, with reservations and prepayment required. Reservations may be made by calling 1-800-BAVARIA or (989) 652-9941. For more information, go to www.bavarianinn.com and view the calendar of events.

Enjoy the Best in Wurst at Bavarian Inn Restaurant June 16

  • Come Celebrate Everything Bratwurst at outdoor Fischer Platz
  • Frankenmuth Friday Fun Nights promise to be better than ever

FRANKENMUTH, Mich. June 8, 2017 – Visitors to Frankenmuth already know what great fun the Friday Fun Nights can be, and the folks behind Bavarian Inn Restaurant are ready to make this June 16 even tastier with “Wurst Night”—a celebration featuring “Everything Bratwurst.”

One thing is for sure: the organizers of this event know how to party. They’ve even set an unbeatable admission price: FREE with the purchase of $2.50 brat or four-piece sampler.

“Wurst Night” delivers great food, including a unique variety of hometown sausages and bratwurst, either on the bun or as a sampler (or a combination of the two).

Bavarian Inn is also teaming up with two other well-known Frankenmuth wurst makers for this event: Kern’s Sausages and Willi’s Sausage Company.

Add in some of the tasty beverages that will be featured and all that’s left to bring to the event is some great music. That’s handled too, with Bavarian Inn Restaurant house entertainer Linda Lee taking to the stage from 6:15 p.m. to 9 p.m.

“This is one of our favorite times of the year,” said Bill Zehnder, President and third generation owner of the family business that continues to delight both visitors and area residents.

“When we set out to add even more spice to Frankenmuth’s Friday Fun Nights, we figured there was no better way than to highlight what we’re all known for—sausages and brats!”

Visitors and those who call Frankenmuth home will be able to share all that’s great about the town that continues to put Michigan on the taste map.

“We’re waiting for you!” adds Bill Zehnder.

Bavarian Inn Kicks Off 50th Anniversary of Iconic Glockenspiel

Festivities Begin This Summer for Fall Observance

FRANKENMUTH, Mich. May 31, 2017 — This October, the Bavarian Inn Glockenspiel will turn 50, but the celebration is kicking off early on select Fridays this summer.

The Glockenspiel, imported by the late Tiny Zehnder in 1967, is known by many as the most recognizable feature of the Bavarian Inn. Installed in a 50-foot tower, this iconic piece of architecture features a moving stage with figurines that depict the legend of the Pied Piper of Hameln four times every day.

In addition to reaching an important milestone, the Glockenspiel was also treated to a complete renovation earlier this year. Its internal mechanisms were redone, and the figurines on the moving stage were refurbished and repainted.

Dorothy Zehnder and some of her grandchildren led the restoration effort, with help from the Verdin Company, Artistic Decorating and Nuechterlein Electric.

Now Frankenmuth area residents will be invited to play the newly-renovated glockenspiel starting in mid-June. House Entertainer Linda Lee will also be singing Happy Birthday to the Frankenmuth icon periodically at the outdoor Fischer Platz. Guests will be able to commemorate the 50th anniversary with exclusive items sold by the Bavarian Inn.

Zehnder was honored as an entrepreneur in recognition for her accomplishments as the driving force for one of Frankenmuth’s – and Michigan’s – most popular vacation destinations.

The purpose of the annual event, part of the YWCA’s mission of empowering women, is to honor leaders who have made outstanding contributions in business, community leadership, education, healthcare, entrepreneurship, or lifetime achievement.

Dorothy, who celebrated her 95th birthday last December, continues doing what she enjoys the most – working in the kitchen of one of the nation’s largest and most successful restaurants.

“I like working,” she says. “I like to cook, and I like people. What else is there that I would like better?”

Dorothy also helps oversee the family’s entire business operations, which, besides the restaurant and lodge, includes its “Curbside to Go” carry-out business, Castle Shops, Frankenmuth River Place Shops, Covered Bridge & Leather Gift Shop, Frankenmuth Cheese Haus, a specialty line of food products, and online merchandising.

She’s also the author of two cookbooks, “Come Cook with Me,” published in 2011, and the follow-up “From My Kitchen to Yours,” published in 2014.

Dorothy, who was born in nearby Reese, Michigan, founded the restaurant with her late husband, William “Tiny” Zehnder, having purchased the former Fischer’s Hotel in 1950. At that time, Dorothy, Tiny and their 12 employees served about 50 people a day. Today the Bavarian Inn Restaurant has 400 employees, serves thousands of people a day in 12 dining rooms and annually ranks among the country’s largest family-run restaurants.

Today Dorothy’s main mission is to oversee quality control in the kitchen – including making sure the mashed potatoes are whipped to perfection, and that the entrees, like the Bavarian Inn’s famous Frankenmuth Chicken®, meet her high standards before heading to the dining room.

Bavarian Inn ‘marching’ to spring with three big events

German wine dinner, scrapbooking weekend, ‘girls’ night out’ slated for March

FRANKENMUTH, Mich. – February 13, 2017 – Looking to shake off those wintertime blues? The Bavarian Inn Restaurant is planning three events during March to please food and wine aficionados, scrapbook hobbyists, and ladies just looking to have a little fun.

Enjoy a tasting tour of some of Germany’s most beloved wines as the Bavarian Inn Restaurant presents its ever-popular German Wine Dinner, which takes place Friday, March 3 at 6:30 p.m.

The Inn is teaming up with Fabiano Brothers to present an exclusive collection of fine German vintages for guests to enjoy, with commentary from the distributor’s own sommelier, Belinda LaDouce. Bavarian Inn Executive Chef Phil Fahrenbruch, the 2012 Silver Plate Award winner, has planned a five-course feast featuring creative food and wine pairings.

The starter course is a Bavarian Inn “hausmade” soft pretzel with aged sharp cheddar beer cheese, accompanied by The Seeker Riesling from Germany’s Mosel region. Next comes a serving of applewood smoked pork loin served over roasted leek and cauliflower purée, with a serving of Schmitt Söhne Piesporter Michelsberg.

Chef Fahrenbruch is also preparing beef rouladen with Bavarian Inn spätzle, accompanied by Bavarian Inn Dornfelder, a smooth-textured dry red varietal and one of Germany’s most popular red wines. The dessert course is the Bavarian Inn’s famous Viennese sacher torte, paired with  Schmitt Söhne Relax Cool Red.

Cost for this special food and wine event is $60 per person.

Scrapbooking – long one of the most popular crafts in the nation – comes to the Bavarian Inn Restaurant March 17-19 as it presents its “Scrapbook Weekend 2017.”

The event offers scrapbook creators and their fellow hobbyists the opportunity to get together for the weekend in a fun and creative atmosphere while experiencing Bavarian Inn food and hospitality.

The weekend restaurant package, priced at $199 per person, includes all meals from Friday evening through Sunday afternoon, the Bavarian Inn’s pretzel-rolling experience, a 10% discount coupon valid all weekend at the Inn’s Castle Shops, and upon departure Sunday afternoon, each guest will receive a 10-piece chicken meal value pack to bring home to friends and family. And, there will be plenty of time for scrapbooking and socializing – until 2 a.m. each evening.

Overnight accommodations are available at the Bavarian Inn Lodge at a discounted room rate of $154 plus 11% tax per night for up to four guests. “Scrapbook Weekend” attendees planning overnight stays should call 888-775-6343 for reservations, and reference group number 12E19B. Bavarian Inn Employees Raise Funds to Help Others

Volunteer Campaigns Raise $18,500 for Charity in 2016

FRANKENMUTH, Mich. – Jan. 30, 2017 – Through its more than 30-year-old Company Giving Program, Bavarian Inn Restaurant employees raised a total of $12,586 to benefit the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan, assisting the agency in its mission to provide nourishment to the hungry in 22 Michigan counties. The total was announced and a check for the entire amount was presented to the charity at a post-holiday employee party, Jan. 9.

According to Joe Putnam, 2016 chairperson of the Bavarian Inn Company Giving Program, the funds were raised through voluntary payroll deduction, candy sales, a holiday open house event and other activities throughout the year that were coupled with $5,000 in matching funds from the Frankenmuth landmark. “Bavarian Inn Restaurant has over 400 caring team members who give so generously each year to help those in need,” he said.

Bavarian Inn Marketing Manager Mandy Borsenik explained that, based on the purchasing power of the Food Bank, the group’s 2016 donation equates to approximately $75,516 in food to help the less fortunate.  She also listed past charities aided by the Company Giving Program:  Fallen and Wounded Soldiers Fund, Hospice for Hope, Special Olympics, Special Days Camp and Saginaw Habitat for Humanity.

At the same time, nearly 300 employees at the nearby Bavarian Inn Lodge raised a total of $2,959 in 2016 employee donations that were matched dollar-for-dollar by the Lodge for a total contribution of $5,918. By employee choice, the contributions were awarded to: Child Abuse Network, American Cancer Society and Make a Wish Foundation.

“The Bavarian Inn Zehnder family has always encouraged charitable contributions to the local community so it is no surprise that our employees have voluntarily followed suit in helping the less fortunate among us,” commented Lodge Marketing Manager Joanna Stratman. “We expect to see similar efforts in 2017,” she concluded.
