Why ‘Knot?’ Celebrate National Pretzel Day Friday, April 26 at Bavarian Inn Restaurant

Michigan on Main Bar and Grill has a special deal

FRANKENMUTH, Mich. – April 19, 2019 – Whether enjoyed at home, the ballpark, or the neighborhood tavern, pretzels are one of America’s favorite snacks. Friday, April 26 is National Pretzel Day, and the Bavarian Inn Restaurant is joining the celebration.

The Restaurant is offering a beer and pretzel special at its Michigan on Main Bar and Grill dining area. That day, guests can enjoy a large soft pretzel along with one of their extensive selection of Michigan craft beers for just $9. Dipping cheese is available for only 50 cents more.

The Bavarian Inn served more than 71,000 housemade pretzels to its guests just last year. 31,000 of those were from the Castle Shop Bakery, located in the lower level of the Restaurant. Their on-the-go pretzels are perfect for those who want to celebrate pretzel day quickly, and their pretzel treats for dogs can let guests’ furry friends in on the fun.

National Pretzel Day originated in Pennsylvania when Governor Ed Rendell, whose state boasts an abundance of German family pretzel bakers, declared it an official observance in 2003.

Michigan on Main Bar and Grill inside the Bavarian Inn Restaurant is a casual and contemporary dining space showcasing Michigan-sourced food along with Michigan craft-brewed beers, Michigan wines and specialty Michigan cocktails.

Tiny and Dorothy Zehnder, 1959

Bavarian Inn Remembers Founder William “Tiny” Zehnder

Frankenmuth patriarch would have turned 100 on April 6

FRANKENMUTH, Mich. – March 25, 2019 –  April 6, 2019 is a special day at the Bavarian Inn Restaurant and the Bavarian Inn Lodge, because it marks the 100th birthday of the late William “Tiny” Zehnder, founder of the restaurant and driving force behind Frankenmuth’s transformation into “Michigan’s Little Bavaria.”

Tiny’s journey to Frankenmuth’s patriarch began in 1950, when the Zehnder family purchased Fischer’s Hotel, which sat across the street from his family’s restaurant. Tiny and his young wife Dorothy (a former waitress at Fischer’s) became the managers of Fischer’s, and immediately set about making improvements. But despite a modernized kitchen, improved building design and more, the restaurant still struggled for survival.

Instead of giving up and closing the restaurant, Tiny and his family decided to expand. In 1959, Fischer’s Hotel was renamed the “Bavarian Inn” in keeping with that instantly recognizable architecture and design that was Tiny’s idea and is the hallmark of Frankenmuth today.

As the restaurant and the town around it grew, Tiny continued to work passionately for nearly 50 years, both expanding his restaurant and encouraging other Frankenmuth businesses to adopt the Bavarian theme. Tiny resigned from active management of the Bavarian Inn Restaurant in 2004, but he remained Chairman of the Board of Bavarian Inn, Inc. (the umbrella entity for all Bavarian Inn properties) for the rest of his life.

While he passed away at age 87 in 2006, there’s no doubt that his legacy lives on through the family-run business and the small town it calls home.

“Tiny was called Mr. Frankenmuth, and is the reason Frankenmuth has the German architecture we do,” said Martha Zehnder Kaczynski, Vice President at Bavarian Inn Lodge and Tiny’s granddaughter. “He was doing ‘Branding’ before it had a name. He implemented ‘Farm to Table’ before it was a trend. Tiny was definitely a man ahead of his time.”

Today, Bavarian Inn, Inc. includes Bavarian Inn Restaurant, Bavarian Inn Lodge, Frankenmuth River Place Shops, and Frankenmuth Gift Shop Inc.

Bavarian Inn’s Michigan on Main Bar and Grill welcomes spring with two big beer events

Founders Kentucky Breakfast Stout Release Party March 15

Bell’s Oberon Ale 2019 Release ‘on tap’ March 25

FRANKENMUTH, Mich. February 27, 2019  – Craft beer lovers have two big release parties ahead at the Bavarian Inn Restaurant‘s Michigan on Main Bar and Grill: a Kentucky Breakfast Stout party on Friday, March 15 beginning at 6 p.m., and the annual party celebrating the springtime release of Bell’s Brewery Oberon Ale on Friday, March 25 from 5-7 p.m.

Kentucky Breakfast Stout, more affectionately known as KBS, is a limited-edition beer from Grand Rapids-based Founders Brewery. This stout is known for being brewed with a “massive amount” of coffee and chocolate before being placed in oak bourbon barrels and aged in mines for 12 months.

Bell’s Oberon Ale is one of the most popular seasonal brews produced by the Kalamazoo and Comstock, Michigan brewers. Available only until September, Bell’s Oberon Ale is a wheat ale described as a “classic summer beer,” with a spicy hop character blended with mild, fruity aromas.

Bavarian Inn Bar Manager Bill Chapman notes that Michigan on Main is the only venue in the Frankenmuth area to host the Oberon Ale release.

At both release parties, guests will be able to participate in games, giveaways, prizes, and one-on-one discussion time with brewery representatives. In addition, Michigan on Main will have menu items to complement the KBS and Bell’s Oberon Ale.

For more information, go to www.bavarianinn.com and view the calendar of events.

Michigan on Main Bar and Grill inside the Bavarian Inn Restaurant is a casual and contemporary dining space showcasing Michigan-sourced food along with Michigan craft-brewed beers, Michigan wines and specialty Michigan cocktails.

Love and laughter: Bavarian Inn Restaurant hosts Valentine’s weekend comedy dinner show

Food and fun happening Friday, Feb. 15

FRANKENMUTH, Mich. – Jan. 23, 2019 – Love and laughter come together for Valentine’s weekend as the Bavarian Inn Restaurant presents a Valentine’s Comedy Dinner Show on Friday, Feb. 15. The fun begins at 6:30 p.m.

Headliners for the evening’s performance are comedians Brent Terhune and Melissa Hager.

Terhune got his start in stand-up comedy in Indianapolis, Indiana at the age of 16. Not many comics can pull off Terhune’s laid-back style of comedy and remain just as absurd, relevant, and funny as he is. Whether talking about the everyday struggles of being a redhead, life as a college student and radio DJ, or his off-the-wall “Uncle Frank and family” stories, Terhune’s act is known to keep audiences laughing well after he’s left the stage.

Hager, a mid-Michigan native and resident, is “local, loved, and laughable,” according to her biography. In the styles of Melissa McCarthy, Jim Carrey, and Will Ferrell, Hager’s light-hearted approach to comedy includes childhood tales, life in the country, and other life lessons turned hilariously upside down. She has also served as emcee at the Frankenmuth Comedy Series and has produced comedy shows across the region.

The evening’s dinner menu includes soup du jour, mixed greens salad, double-cut barbecue pork chop, potato cheese puffs, family style noodles, vegetable du jour, and a special Valentine’s dessert.

Cost of the event is $50 per person, which includes show, meal, a non-alcoholic beverage, tax and gratuity. A cash bar will be available. Content is suitable for adults. Reservations and prepayment are required and may be made by contacting the Bavarian Inn Restaurant at 1-800-BAVARIA or (989) 652-9941.
