Bavarian Inn matriarch, Dorothy Zehnder, celebrating 99th birthday December 1

Wish Dorothy a Happy Birthday!

FRANKENMUTH, Mich. – Nov. 23, 2020 – Not about to be stopped by the pandemic, Dorothy Zehnder, co-founder of the family-owned Bavarian Inn Restaurant will celebrate her 99th birthday on Tuesday, December 1, 2020. At 99 years young, Dorothy still works 6 days a week in the Bavarian Inn kitchen.

“Dorothy loves people,” says granddaughter Katie Zehnder Weiss. “She loves to cook and bring joy to people with our many menu offerings.”

Fans of Dorothy are invited to send her birthday greetings by email: events@bavarianinn.com. Dorothy will remain inside the Bavarian Inn kitchen and not greet the public on Dec 1st. Even though their dining rooms are currently closed in accordance with the most recent restrictions, you can still taste Dorothy’s delicious cooking through take-out available 11-7 p.m. daily from the Bake Shop. While there, get some Christmas shopping done in the Castle Shops. Frankenmuth is open for business.

For more than 80 years, Dorothy has been instrumental with the Frankenmuth Bavarian Inn and the many operations under that name. The diverse array of businesses includes the Bavarian Inn Restaurant and Castle Shops, Bavarian Inn Lodge, River Place Shops, Covered Bridge Shop, Frank’s Muth, Frankenmuth Cheese Haus, a specialty line of food products, and an online store.

A recent Michigan Women’s Hall of Fame inductee, Dorothy is also the author of three cookbooks, “Cookies and Bars” published in 1986. “Come Cook with Me,” published in 2011, and the follow-up “From My Kitchen to Yours,” published in 2014. Her most recent cookbook “From My Kitchen to Yours” is available for purchase at the online store at https://onlinestore.bavarianinn.com and are filled with stories about Dorothy, cooking, her family and the German-themed restaurant they created.

Dorothy, growing up on a farm in nearby Reese, Michigan, founded the Bavarian Inn with her late husband, William “Tiny” Zehnder. At full employment the Bavarian Inn Corporation has approximately 1,000 employees, serves thousands of people in a day and approximately 900,000 meals annually, and ranks in the top 50 largest family-run restaurants in the USA. Dorothy’s children and their spouses, along with her grandchildren – a total of 9 family members – work alongside her every day to continue the success story of the Bavarian Inn.

Despite Michigan’s struggles with COVID-19 this year, the Bavarian Inn has held its own, working hard to stay focused on meeting guidelines and protocols for health safety while also maintaining its role as one of Frankenmuth’s leading businesses.

While the restaurant and travel industries continue to experience challenges, the Bavarian Inn remains an icon for the community and the State of Michigan, just like Dorothy Zehnder herself.

Bavarian Inn Restaurant Again Named One of Nation’s Top Independent Restaurants

Highest Ranked Michigan Restaurant on the List

FRANKENMUTH, Mich. – Nov. 17, 2020 – The Bavarian Inn Restaurant, long considered one of Michigan’s most popular dining destinations, has again been named in the top 100 independent restaurants in the United States for 2019.

Restaurant Business’s “Top 100 Independents” ranking is a measure of the highest grossing independent restaurants from across the country. Only restaurants with five or fewer locations are considered independents for the purposes of the list. The final ranks are based on gross 2019 food and beverage sales and information gathered through surveys.

The Bavarian Inn Restaurant ranked #50 out of the 100 and is the top rated restaurant in all of Michigan. In 2019, they served almost 900,000 meals.

“Our focus at the Bavarian Inn is always on serving our guests,” said Katie Zehnder Weiss, fourth generation owner. “Our family is grateful for our team members that work hard to create enjoyable experiences for our guests, many of whom have been dining with us for generations. We look forward to continuing the great family traditions we provide in Frankenmuth for years to come.”

This Thanksgiving, traditions will be a little different. The Bavarian Inn Restaurant is currently closed for dine-in service per the recent Executive Orders by the Michigan Health Department. Take-out meals are available daily 10-7pm. Reserve your Thanksgiving Take-Out meal to be picked up on Wednesday, Nov 25th, Thursday, Nov 26th or Friday, Nov 27th by this Sunday, Nov 22nd. The retail Castle Shops located in the lower level of the restaurant will remain open with CDC guidelines in place.

Since 1950, the Bavarian Inn has adapted to business needs, which is why they continue to be among the Top Independent Restaurants in the USA. 2020 has been a year of adapting. “We would like to thank all our guests for supporting us during this time,” said Zehnder Weiss. “And we look forward to seeing their smiling eyes soon.”

Those in attendance from left to right:
Michael Abraham and Gary Landless with Future Energy, Michael Zehnder, Tim Miscovich with River Place Shops, Amy Zehnder Grossi, Martha Zehnder Kaczynski, Sheila Stamiris Frankenmuth’s DDA Director, Dorothy Zehnder, Christie Bierlein with Frankenmuth Chamber, Bill Zehnder, Judy Zehnder, Frankenmuth Mayor Mary Anne Ackerman, Karen Zehnder, Tammy Rodda Frankenmuth Gift Shops Inc general manager, and Julie Bills Covered Bridge Shop manager.

Frankenmuth’s first electric vehicle charging stations installed on Bavarian Inn property

FRANKENMUTH, Mich. — Nov 9, 2020 – Today, the Bavarian Inn Zehnder family reveals Frankenmuth’s first set of electric vehicle charging stations just in time for the holiday shopping season. The charging stations are located on the north side of the Covered Bridge Shop at 775 S. Main next to the Bavarian Inn Restaurant.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Electric Vehicle Charging Station was attended by Frankenmuth city officials, members of the Bavarian Inn Zehnder family, and Gary Landless of Future Energy.

The Electric Vehicle Charging Station Initiative was a collaborative effort between the Bavarian Inn Corporation and Consumers Energy, which provided a grant to assist in funding the overall project. Installation of the electric vehicle charging stations was completed by Future Energy, a Michigan-based company using state-of-the-art energy solutions.

To date, this is the first and only set of electric vehicle charging stations in the greater Frankenmuth area. Two charging stations can charge a total of four electric vehicles at the same time.

The project enhances the many tourism-centered offerings of the Bavarian Inn Restaurant, Bavarian Inn Lodge, and Frankenmuth River Place Shops and provides a “Green Solution” to a rise in electric vehicle usage and environmental awareness.

“We are very excited to continue to provide our guests and visitors new offerings while contributing responsibly to protecting our environment.” said Michael Keller Zehnder, general manager at the Frankenmuth Bavarian Inn Lodge.

Guests can safely and efficiently charge their electric vehicles for a minimal user fee using the convenient ChargePoint app or a credit card at the charging stations, located just off Main Street in Frankenmuth near the Bavarian Inn Restaurant. The charging stations are open 24 hours a day.

According to ChargePoint, the network has provided over 82 million charges and helped drivers save over 98 million gallons of gas globally.

Electric vehicle drivers are already taking notice of the charging stations. One reviewer celebrated the new addition to Frankenmuth and noted it was “great that the car can fill up on electrons while we fill up on chicken.”

Guests and visitors are invited to enjoy all the wonderful offerings Frankenmuth has to offer while charging their electric vehicles for the ride home.

Tastings include Bavarian Inn Private Select bourbon

FRANKENMUTH, Mich. – Sept. 8, 2020 – Growing in popularity each time, guests looking to taste fine bourbons by Maker’s Mark will get another chance this month as the Bavarian Inn Restaurant hosts another unique Bourbon Dinner, this time on Friday, Sept. 25.

Better still, one of the featured bourbons that evening will be the unique private label bourbon: Bavarian Inn Private Selection by Maker’s Mark. The bourbon, now available at the Restaurant and Bavarian Inn Lodge, is the latest product in a strong private label program that has been expanding at the Restaurant and Lodge over many decades. It features a unique taste crafted by the Bavarian Inn team working directly with Maker’s Mark.

The Bourbon Dinner begins at 6:30 p.m. and includes a four-course menu by Silver Plate Award Winner Chef Phil Fahrenbruch, accompanied by a variety of Maker’s Mark® barrel-aged bourbons. The guest speaker for the evening will be Greta Harper, a Maker’s Mark Diplomat.

Please note that guests will be required to follow social distancing and face covering guidelines.

Maker’s Mark® began with one family’s quest to create a bourbon they enjoyed drinking and sharing with friends. That’s hardly revolutionary today, but in 1953 it changed an industry. Bill Samuels Sr.’s quest to create Maker’s Mark® began with his only copy of the family’s trusted 170-year-old recipe. It was that recipe the sixth-generation distiller promptly set on fire and started from scratch with a wheated mash that focused on a smooth flavor profile that “wouldn’t blow your ears off.”

Bavarian Inn Restaurant and Lodge Release new Private Selection Maker’s Mark Bourbon

FRANKENMUTH, Mich. – August 18, 2020  – The Bavarian Inn Restaurant and Lodge have teamed up with Maker’s Mark, one of the country’s finest producers of American bourbon, to release a unique private label bourbon.

The Bavarian Inn Private Selection, by Maker’s Mark, is now available at the Restaurant and Lodge following its arrival in July. It will also be featured at a sold-out Bourbon Dinner later this month.

The new Bavarian Inn bourbon is the latest product in a strong private label program already in place at the Restaurant and Lodge that includes beer, wine and root beer, among others.

“For decades we have offered high quality private label beers and wines on our Bavarian Inn properties,” said Bill Zehnder, President of the Bavarian Inn. “My father Tiny Zehnder had always hand selected each one, so when Maker’s Mark offered us a chance to develop our own bourbon we jumped at the opportunity. As a private select drink it will nicely complement our current list of excellent bourbons.”

Under the Maker’s Mark process, the Bavarian Inn team, including family members and key managers, traveled to Kentucky where they chose the various barrel “staves” that would develop the flavor profile for this private selection. The 50-gallon barrel took over five months to distill.

While bottles of the bourbon are not being offered for sale, guests at the Bavarian Inn properties can try it many different ways, offered “neat,” “on the rocks” or in a number of classic bourbon cocktails. Bar managers at the Bavarian Inn are currently working on developing specialty cocktails using the bourbon that will be unique to Frankenmuth.

The Bavarian Inn first began its relationship with Maker’s Mark last year when planning the Restaurant’s first bourbon dinner, an event in January that drew over 200 guests.

As the relationship grew, Bill Zehnder said his daughter connected them with another Frankenmuth High School graduate who works for Maker’s Mark. From there the family worked with a Maker’s Mark “diplomat” to learn about and become involved in distilling the special bourbon.

Maker’s Mark private select program allows customers to take a fully matured cask strength bourbon and have staves with different flavor profiles inserted to enhance and finish the flavor process. This barrel finishing takes an additional nine weeks to complete.

It’s that recipe the sixth-generation distiller promptly set on fire and started from scratch with a wheated mash that focused on a smooth flavor profile that “wouldn’t blow your ears off.”
